What To Do About Your Whiteheads & Blackheads

Having to suffer from acne and its aftereffects are incomparable to any other suffering. It just shatters the dream of clear skin into a million pieces. Breakouts come out of nowhere when you least expect them and tend to leave their mark before bidding farewell.

Out of all those insufferable types of acne, whiteheads and blackheads are considered to be the less severe types. Being the non-inflammatory types that they are, they usually do not cause swellings. And therefore are less painful than inflammatory ones.

Whiteheads or closed comedones as the name suggests are usually white and circular. As it enlarges, the skin around it becomes tighter or wrinkled. Whiteheads usually do not leave behind scars.

Blackheads, on the other hand, are known as open comedones. Unlike whiteheads, they are darker blemishes. These open comedones are a result of closed comedones opening and widening, meaning that blackheads too first started off as whiteheads. After these whiteheads open, the contents tend to darken as they come into contact with air, resulting in the black or dark area of the blackhead.

Over-the-counter products containing Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid are usually sufficient to treat blackheads and whiteheads. Even certain precautionary measures can be taken to limit their resurgence. Washing the face twice a day with warm water and soap is recommended. But remember not to overwash and irritate your skin by drying it. Also, reducing stress levels and staying hydrated will also help. Last but not least, always remember to wear sunscreen when you are outdoors.

Sometimes even the precautionary measures and over-the-counter medication don’t seem to be enough to keep the situation at bay. That is when you need to seek the help of Leesburg Dermatology. Dr. Gurgen can help you with diagnosing and treating a variety of skin issues. Call the office now to get an appointment right awaywith Dr. Gurgen.
